The Women’s Institute (WI) was formed in 1915 to revitalise rural communities and encourage women to become more involved in producing food during the First World War. Since then the organisation’s aims have broadened and the WI is now the largest voluntary women’s organisation in the UK. The WI celebrated its centenary in 2015 and currently has almost 220,000 members in approximately 6,300 WIs.
The WI plays a unique role in providing women with educational opportunities and the chance to build new skills, to take part in a wide variety of activities and to campaign on issues that matter to them and their communities.
The NFWI is a non party political, non sectarian organization
The WI has campaigned on such issues as: Breast and Cervical Cancer Screening, Child Benefit, Consumer Rights, Environment, Pollution
Public Transport, Support and Recognition for Carers, Equal Opportunities

All the members of the Thursby Women’s Institute would like to extend a warm welcome to you
Thursby WI has been meeting in the village for over sixty years. We hold monthly meetings, when a short business meeting is followed by an evening speaker. A wide range of subjects are covered over the year by professionals and enthusiastic amateurs from the area. There are often meetings and social evenings also with other WIs.
The aim always is to provide entertaining and interesting evenings.
